I live in a For-Profit Independent Long-Term Care apartment. I am not independent by any stretch of the imagination except for my mind. It is that Which gives me the ability to see a different perspective. I also feel that since the residents are in general, 25 to 30 years older than I am more often than not battling dementia and Alzheimer’s I am more likely to speak up. We do not have a functioning residents Council and as a privately owned building, management pretty much does whatever they want. That is never good for the residents. We have no one advocating for us. It’s very important not to lose sight of the fact that even if a residence is not treating people the way most of you’d want your mothers to be treated they have their good points. After all, I do live in one.
